Recon: Murwin Park no – but Janesville landing yes

Post-paddle reconnaissance: we scouted a potential trip from Murwin County Park on the Yahara (at Caledonia Rd and Co Rd H) to a public landing on the Rock River at River Rd just north of Highway 14 in Janesville.

We checked out the Rock River landing first-very nice concrete ramp, lots of parking. Then on to Murwin Park which we realized we had actually checked out years ago and decided it was beyond our capabilities – current too swift and it looks like there is a sharp drop off in depth within a few feet of the shoreline, whereas we like to see the bottom for about a canoe length to feel comfortable launching.

In addition, there is a bridge within a 100 feet or so of the landing; and yesterday, at least, we would have had to thread the needle in a area between the two center pilings to avoid deadfall. Maybe we’ve checked out the Yahara only during periods of high water (flow at USGS 05430175 near Fulton was 873 cfs compared with median 320 cfs), but we’re thinking the Yahara in this area is just not for us.
