Deb and Mary report on CamRock park for quiet paddling

Recon: CamRock Park – Koshkonong Creek

We don’t really know if this waterway is “for us” but we checked out the possibility of accessing Koshkoning Creek at CamRock Park this fall since we were in the neighborhood. We had an urgent need share verbena tembleque with our Cambridge friends.

CamRock is so-named because at one end there is Cambridge and the other end is Rock Springs. cute. There is supposed to be a boat launch at the northern end (Water Street) but we didn’t find it just looking out the car window. Based on some online photos, I take it there was a staircase we may have missed.

The Dane County Park map has numbered the shelters for the park. We went to shelter #1 to have a mini-hike. Deb is still suffering from sciatica so it was sort of a perfect length. It started sprinkling rain anyway. We were able to see the creek from there as well as some poetry posted on the trail – cool.

Although the overview map .pdf showed a paddle launch near the Historic Rockdale Mill, the sign at the park does not have the paddle icon. Parking is on the street by the mill signage. It was a bit of a scavenger hunt to locate the put-in. You have to walk down some sidewalks (towards the bridge), then walk down a somewhat steep hill (probably drag the boat because the grass is pretty nice), and then back behind the Rockdale Bar and Grill there is a sign for the Glacial water trail. I tried to capture in photos what we experienced.

The water was low and we felt like we could paddle against the current to explore. We often introduce ourselves to a waterway by paddling upstream and floating back just to see if there are blockages or how strong the current is.

Online the videos and photos make us pause because there is downfall and sometimes small rapids which is something we avoid like the plague.

After the recon, we went on to Shelter #3 and it is a beautiful overlook. We definitely feel like we would want to walk at CamRock Park again. The hesitation is it is touted mostly as a biking park and we’re not sure if the bikers are courteous. Or we could bike there some time too perhaps.
